For years, the Howard Theatre in Shaw sat abandoned, its facade and structure falling victim to the elements. But with the historic theatre set to open its doors in early April after a $29 million rehab, a slate of well-known acts have already announced that they’ll be playing the venue in the coming months.
Last week the theatre announced that Wale would headline a community day event on April 9, ahead of an opening gala on April 12. After that, comedienne Wanda Sykes will perform a three-night run from April 13-15, Mos Def will hit the stage on April 14 and The Roots will play April 15-16. Bad Brains and GZA are scheduled for April 20, Chuck Brown for April 21, Chuck Berry for April 28, Chaka Khan for May 5, Esperanza Spalding for May 12, and Jerry Lee Lewis for May 18.
Additionally, the Washingtonian reported last week that former Iron Chef America contestant Marcus Samuelsson has signed on as a consulting chef for the theatre’s full-service restaurant.
